Researchers have recently offered helpful insights on maximizing success in learning by creating an appropriate learning space. It’s not all about the teaching. There is plenty to be said about the best usage of classroom space.

Educators, take note:

    • The traditional classroom layout of desks in rows limits student engagement. A better use of learning space would be a seating arrangement that would enable and encourage student-to-teacher as well as student-to-student interaction.  Placing desks in a circle or creating small tables using four to six desks facing each other is a better choice. This layout also encourages teachers to move about which better engages the students.

    • Whether you spend 50 minutes or several hours in a particular learning environment, both students and faculty benefit from a variety of seating choices. Some seating can be comfortable, like a reading corner with pillows. Others can be more corporate, representing seriousness towards the task at hand.

    • Encouraging student movement throughout the learning space may be helpful for improved productivity . Place supplies in various areas. Put papers, markers, tape, etc. in one location. Have a library in another. Make a quiet area for contemplative work and a more social area for cooperative work. Providing different locations for activities caters to the many needs and moods of students.

    • Pay attention to lighting. Some activities are performed better in bright light while others might find a dimmer atmosphere more calming and comforting. Play with both classroom lighting and natural light for the best results.

    • Check in with your students. Find out if they have suggestions for making their classroom the most productive possible. What is working and what needs improvement? Be open to suggestions. Hey, you never know. Maybe the next star designer is sitting in your classroom!
